For example, the lighting choices you make can noticeably affect both your decor and your monthly energy bills.
Lighting is a vital part of any home decor. Obviously, the best money-saving tip involving lighting is to turn the lights off when you leave a room. Perhaps the second-most logical frugal lighting tip is to use the minimum amount of light required while you’re in a room. In addition to those simple tips, there are numerous other ways that you can incorporate money-saving ideas into your interior lighting choices.
The type of light bulb you use greatly affects your energy costs. Incandescent bulbs are the least expensive to purchase, but they’re not the most energy-efficient. A 60-watt incandescent bulb costs around $1 while a compact fluorescent bulb costs about $4. You can justify the additional expense of switching from incandescent to CFL bulbs when you compare the 1,200-hour incandescent bulb life span to the 10,000-hour life span of the CFL bulb.
Comparing usage of electricity costs between incandescent and CFL bulbs indicates that you can save several hundred dollars by using CFL lighting. This excellent comparison chart also provides information regarding LED bulbs. While LED bulbs are an energy-saving alternative to incandescent bulbs, their purchase price is not currently budget-friendly.
As an alternative to turning on a large ceiling light, you can place small lamps in various locations throughout a room to provide more directed lighting. A table lamp or floor lamp is ideal for a reading area. Task lighting can be turned on and off as needed and will illuminate just the area where you are working. Pendant and mini-pendant lights are decoratively attractive, money-saving lighting options for areas such as a kitchen work island or small dining area, or as ambiance lighting in a bedroom or bathroom. Wall-mounted swing-arm lamps are great for bedside reading or for placement beside a sofa or accent chair.
Three-way bulbs and dimmer switch options are excellent money-saving features for interior lighting. You might also want to explore timers as a way to reduce your expenses. Motion-sensor lights with an automatic shut-off feature that you can set in time increments that you prefer are an excellent money-saving option for any area of your home. They are especially ideal for closets, bathrooms, a basement, or a garage.
Nightlights are both a convenience and a safety feature for a home. They are inexpensive to purchase and use. There are many decorative and energy-efficient options available.
Natural light is your most frugal source of light. You can maximize its benefit by keeping your window treatments to a minimum whenever possible so that natural light can flow into the room. You can capitalize on the natural light entering a room by arranging large furniture items so that they do not interfere with the flow of light. Another frugal furniture arrangement tip is to create a reading area or place a dining table, desk, or craft table near a window in order to take advantage of the natural light.
Sunlight can definitely work in your favor in colder months. There is something very soothing about sitting inside on a winter day and absorbing the warm sunlight as it streams through the window. You might want to seasonally rearrange the furniture in your home to take advantage of such an opportunity.
During the summer months, blocking the sunlight from the room will actually lower your utility bill. Therefore, when choosing window treatments, you might want to invest in sun-blocking window treatments that you can hang or remove, and open or close according to the outdoor conditions. Light, airy window treatments are ideal for letting in sunlight year-round and can be used to complement a variety of decorating styles.
Follow The Dollar Stretcher on Twitter

Source: Money Talks (http://s.tt/159gc)

Compare your notes here about about a pressing political issue!!!

Five Fallacies of the Keystone Oil Pipeline

<html:abbr class="published" title="2011-12-20T05:00">December 20, 2011</html:abbr>

By David Zeiler, Associate Editor, Money Morning

There's been a lot of buzz about Keystone oil pipeline recently, but unfortunately, the facts about the project have been obscured by political wrangling.

That's not good for the investors who have money at stake. So here's what you really need to know about the Keystone oil pipeline - and more importantly, the five biggest fallacies being espoused by unscrupulous politicians and the debate-warping mainstream media.

First proposed by TransCanada Corp. (NYSE:TRP) in 2008, the 1,700-mile Keystone oil pipeline would carry 700,000 barrels of crude per day from the Canadian oil sands in Alberta to refineries in Port Arthur, TX.

As far as facts go, that's about all the politicians in Washington agree on. Now here's where the truth ends and the spin begins:

Fallacy No. 1: The Keystone pipeline will create 20,000 jobs ... or 100,000 jobs.
TransCanada commissioned a study that said construction of the pipeline would create 20,000 construction jobs, and more than 100,000 spin-off jobs. Republican (and a few Democratic) supporters have been only too happy to repeat these numbers in speeches in support of the pipeline.

The State Department, in its study, came up with a more modest figure of 5,000 to 6,000 construction jobs.

The discrepancy comes from how the TransCanada study calculated the jobs. That study used a "one person, one year model." So if it takes 6,500 workers two years to build the pipeline, that's 13,000 jobs, with the other 7,000 coming from supply manufacturers.

And if that math isn't fuzzy enough for you, take a look at the calculations for the 118,000 spin-off jobs.

That number is based on the one person, one-year model in addition to something called the multiplier effect, which takes the capital costs of the project and feeds it into a formula. In short, these job numbers are about as reliable as a politician's campaign promise.

And yet one more delicious irony: Back in 2009, Republicans complained that the $787 billion stimulus package failed to create long-term stability given that many of the jobs created only lasted as long as the public works projects that were proposed.

Democrats defended the temporary nature of the employment, arguing that it was a necessary step in order to boost economic demand around the country. Now it's the Democrats arguing that the Keystone project fails to create permanent jobs, while Republicans argue the project is needed to combat unemployment.

Fallacy No. 2: Keystone pipeline will increase greenhouse gases, worsening climate change.
Well, yes and no.

The argument from Democrats is that the process of extracting the oil from the Athabasca fields will generate greenhouse gases. Sure enough, it does. But stopping the Keystone pipeline won't change that unless it prevents production, a long shot at best.

You see, the Keystone pipeline isn't the only game in town. At least one other proposed pipeline would run across British Columbia to Canada's west coast, where it would be exported to Asian markets.

The greenhouse gas impact studies assume no Keystone pipeline means no production from the Athabasca oil sands, and assume as well that the Keystone pipeline would pump nothing but oil sands product at 100% capacity 100% of the time - not likely.

The true impact of the Keystone pipeline on global greenhouse gas emissions isn't clear, but would be far lower than its opponents claim.

Fallacy No. 3: The United States is dangerously reliant on hostile energy sources.

Republican presidential candidate and former Utah governor Jon Huntsman claimed in a November speech that the United States spends $300 billion a year on oil imports from "unfriendly regimes."

While the dollar figure is about correct, much of that imported oil is coming from nations friendly to the United States.

According to the Energy Information Administration (EIA), countries in the Western Hemisphere supply 49% of our imports. In 2010, Canada supplied 25%, Saudi Arabia 12%, Nigeria 11%, Venezuela (a Western Hemisphere unfriendly) 10%, and Mexico 9% last year. Only 18% of U.S. oil imports came from the Persian Gulf.

What's more, we're seeing an increase from our friendly neighbors. Crude figures through August 2011 show Canada still in that 25% range, with Mexico now second, at 12.7%.

Second, while the United States does do business with some unfriendly trading partners, so does every other country in the world. The rising costs of energy have less to do with political tension between the United States and its trading partners, and more to do with the combination of growing demand in China and other emerging economies, as well as supply concerns stemming from the reduction in easily accessible sources of energy.

Fallacy No. 4: The Keystone pipeline will improve our long-term energy independence.
Republican candidates and pundits have argued that the pipeline is essential for the future energy security of the United States. However, this view is sorely misguided.

The pipeline will connect refiners, as Money Morning Global Energy Strategist Dr. Kent Moors recently noted in his Oil & Energy Investor newsletter. The oil that reaches Gulf refineries could ultimately be consumed in the United States, but the finished products could just as easily be exported to China, Japan, or any other oil-hungry nation.

Energy companies will look to sell their oil to the highest bidder.

In fact, the United States is currently a net exporter of gasoline. In September, the U.S. exported 430,000 more barrels of gasoline than it imported. The country is now on track to become a net exporter of refined oil products for the first time in 62 years.

Meanwhile, domestic prices at the gas pump are poised to rise to record levels.

Because of the nature of the global oil market and domestic supply, the Keystone pipeline would contribute very little, if anything, to U.S. energy independence.

Fallacy No. 5: The Keystone pipeline could result in a disastrous oil spill.
This is another point opponents have made that, while not exactly wrong, is misleading.

Just about every energy project carries the risk of an accident. The real question is whether, for any given project, that risk is acceptable.

If governments cancelled energy projects on the basis that a bad accident could happen, very few would ever be approved, including oil pipelines, natural gas fields, and nuclear power plants. We'd all be sitting in the dark.

The State Department's study of the Keystone pipeline said there are reasonable ways to manage the environmental risks. And pipelines are generally considered the safest way to transport oil.

Another complaint made by Democratic opponents is that the pipeline would cross the environmentally sensitive Sand Hills area in Nebraska, which sits atop the Ogallala Aquifer.

That, too, is wrong.

TransCanada in November reached an agreement with Nebraska officials on an adjustment to the pipeline route that would detour around the Sand Hills region, negating that objection.

Lakeville Friends of Environment Have Success in PTP3!

Lakeville Friends of the Environment were happy to see such a wonderful turnout for their third annual Pedal the Parks event. Even with the weather being both foggy and chilly, more than 80 riders attended the event. After a brief sendoff from Steve Michaud from the Lakeville Park and Rec department, Alan briefed the riders about the necessity of riding safe and smart. Lakeville Friends of the Environment and the MN Bike Alliance are again joining together for a three tiered family bike ride and Sustainability Fair. This year the ride will be on Saturday and we will be starting out Downtown Lakeville at Pioneer Park Plaza with speakers, bike safety check and refreshments. We want to encourage people to get on their bike to ride the paths around Lakeville and stop at the Farmers Market on the weekends and more!
This is also the date that 350.org uses to acknowledge our carbon footprint with events from all over the world. What's new this year is that we are going to have local vendors that "walk the walk" and practice sustainability. Many have signed up to show off their products and services that are not only good for the environment, but good for you!

What is sustainability?

Sustainability is an economic, social, and ecological concept. It is intended to be a means of configuring civilization and human activity so that society and its members are able to meet their needs and express their greatest potential in the present, while preserving biodiversity and natural ecosystems, and planning and acting for the ability to maintain these ideals indefinitely. Sustainability affects every level of organization, from the local neighborhood to the entire globe.

We are currently looking for vendors, entertainers and volunteers with this event. Lakeville Friends of the Environment are on Facebook, as well. Last year we had more than 100 registered bikers! It gets bigger and better each year! So stay tuned for more information!

Saturday Cleanup April 16 9:00 at South Creek!!!

<span style="color: #345a8b; But, that is exactly what we did! All the pre-planning and mass emails paid off in the form of happy faces and words of thanks from an unbelievable, and patient, group of bikers from Lakeville and surrounding communities. All of our sponsors came through with their donations and even setting up tables along the Park Shelter. Fueled by a front page story, this event grew to include 101 registered bikers. The event started with registration and setup along the shores of beautiful Lake Marion and Casperson Park's new playground. Speakers included our very own Veda Kanitz, world renowed explorer - Will Steger, Diane Craig and Al Downs from Bike Alliance of Minnesota. After a photo op for the 350.org website, the bikers were organized into groups. They had the opportunity to take advantage of bike and helmet safety checks prior to the ride. We had trail leaders taking the bikers on the 3 or 10 mile loops. The 10 mile bikers were treated to refreshments in Downtown Lakeville. Then, everyone returned to the park for music and refreshments, and of course, to hear if their name would be called for the prize drawings. What a fun time for everyone!

We could not have done this event without the help of our sponsors and supporters:
Bike Alliance of Minnesota
Active Living (Dakota County]
Dakota Electric
DanceWorks
Rotary Club of Lakeville
Cub Foods of Lakeville
Apple Wood Orchard
Main St. Café
Subway
Valley Bike and Ski
Heritage Library - Dakota Library
Dakota County Technical College
Chickpea and Garbonzo, musicians from Shoreview
and our many volunteers who helped with setup, cleanup, parking, trail leaders and serving refreshments!!!

And now, to get ready for next year....

2nd Annual Pedal the Parks - Sunday, October 10 - a 350.org event!

Lakeville Friends of the Environment (LFE) and the Bicycle Alliance of Minnesota (BAM) are hosting our 2nd Annual Lakeville Pedal the Parks free family bike ride. BAM is a nonprofit encouraging bicycling as a healthy transportation alternative. This year’s Pedal the Parks event coincides with 350.org’s worldwide event: a 10-10-10 Global Day of Action. Our goal for the event is to show families that they can safely bike to their local parks and businesses, save money, save gas, burn calories and enjoy some great outdoor recreation.
We are happy to announce that Minnesota’s own Will Steger, Arctic explorer and environmentalist, has agreed to speak at this year’s event! Valley Bike and Ski will be on hand at our starting place of Casperson Park to perform bike safety checks while participants register for the ride and listen to Will and other speakers. Then riders will be led by Alan Downs of BAM and other volunteers on a route that takes them along bike trails to Antler Park, downtown Lakeville, and back to Casperson Park where we plan to serve a healthy snack and refreshments and have a drawing for prizes.

We would really like to keep this a free family event! What organizations are involved? The following is from a blog posted by Slow Food USA:

SUPPORT RELIEF FOR GULF FISHERMEN

The environmental impact of the BP oil drilling disaster is a blow to all of us, but it's acutely painful for those fishermen who rely on the Gulf for their livelihoods.

At moments like this, we can support them by donating to relief efforts (Oxfam, Gulf Aid, Gulf Coast Fund and the Gulf Restoration Network are collecting donations) by volunteering (Sierra Club is hosting clean-ups) and by staying informed (the Louisiana Seafood Board is posting news). We can also support the ongoing rebuilding of the Gulf and other regional seafood industries by making sure the seafood we buy is domestic and sustainably harvested.

We hope to assist their efforts later this year by sponsoring a Bike ride during our 10/10/10 activities that raises awareness about 350!!!

Did you miss the talk about Toxicity at the Library?

For those who could not make it: What an eye opener this was? The Healthy Legacy Coalition works to ensure people, products and the environment are free of toxic chemicals. Many states are working on keeping their shorelines safe, but it is nearly impossible. Remember this is the Gulf of Mexico, not a little creek. This is huge area, able to see if from space. Do you feel helpless about this issue? They say that it could affect tourism in the states and Mexico this summer. Maybe if it affects people's paycheck there will be some real action. I heard that shrimp fishermen are suing BP for their carelessness. It would be good to see some solution to this problem, and soon! Contact BP and let them know your discord, contact your representatives to let them know there should be controls in place to take care of this problem and keep it from ever happening again. Good Riddance!!!

Earth Day 2010

So what did you do for Earth Day? Did you go for a walk? Did you plant a tree? Did you say thank you to Mother Earth for giving us a wonderful place to live? So much has been going on while we celebrated Earth Day's 40th Anniversary. I watched a report on TV that stated that on the surface we are doing some great things for our earth - recycling, shopping locally, using more reusable bags, buying in bulk, eating less meat, etc. However, behind the curtain we need to be doing so much more! Our businesses are still polluting our waters, many lakes fish are not edible, wild fish sources are not completely safe and the list is endless. In fact the week around Earth Day was a little bit of the good, bad and the ugly! The good was that people were doing some great things to celebrate Earth Day by cleaning up and pledging to do more to live "green." The bad was that a volcano in Iceland blew volcanic ash that covered most of Europe. Besides the inconvenience of stranding thousands in airports across the world, it spew volcanic ash that disrupted the waters and life of a huge part of our globe. Mother Nature put on a show that made us stand up and pay attention! Then there was the ugly... along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico there was a tragic huge spill and explosion of an oil rig. Lives were lost and this is mess that will take years to cleanup and effect the waters in and around the Gulf of Mexico. Yes, accidents happen and somehow the people will clean it up...but what a curse it is to be living in the land of consumption! Let's hope that the right people are in place to make quick work of the clean up.

Thank you for helping with the Clean Up on April 17th!

Thank you to everyone who took time out from their busy schedules to help clean up North Park and the adjoining trail and creek beds. Did you see some of the stuff we found... from piles of cigarette butts to gas cans? Yes, gas cans with some gas still in them. Think what our world would be like if no one cared, thankfully we did and what a difference it will make!!! Keep on looking out for opportunities to clean up your community... there is always room for improvement. Thank you to Pack 268 for the scouts, parents and friends that helped us out!
